Skinny Russian Models

These girls seriously never eat, I swear! I was recently at an art meets tech type party here in San Francisco (where I currently live). Picture the party at a swanky loft in SOMA, lots of geeky tech dudes who may or may not have virgin lips…and for some reason tall, thin Russian models.

And then there’s me…newly chubbier me. San Francisco, if you haven’t heard, is famous for really good restaurants. I moved here six months ago and let’s just say I enjoyed myself.

I’ve never been thin…but I’d lost a good 12 lbs before the move and was feeling pretty good about that.

So how did I lose the weight in the first place? Like the Russian models, I didn’t eat so much. I’m not advocating people stop eating, but let’s have a moment of truth here. America has an over-eating disorder. It’s so bad that people are known to actually worry about you if you skip a meal or choose just to have a salad.

Meanwhile…in Russia, France and other places around the world you are kinda greedy looking if you eat as much as we do. In fact, gluttony is one of the deadly sins.

Deadly indeed. Over-eating comes with all sorts of ailments from asthma, diabetes, cancer risks, heart disease, snoring issues… There’s also new evidence out there that suggests under eating can even prolong your life. And yet I’m willing to bet there’s a good percentage of folks reading this article that believe under eating will “ruin their metabolism” or that it sounds like a call to support anorexia, despite zero evidence that skipping meals or eating less will lower anything but the number on your scale (ps eating more frequently also does nothing for your metabolism, either).

And the Russian models, tall, beautiful Russian models, stay slim by eating less and playing more while we sit in our chubby person corner, wishing we could wear what they wear and look like they do.

How to Beat Raging Sugar Cravings

This is going to shock you – you are NOT a sugar addict. Something is missing in your life and you are using sugar and sugary foods, baked goods and other foods to supplement that hole.

Having pointed that out, sugar is a drug you’ve probably been using for a while to cope. There are two things you need to do to kick the habit.

1. Fill the void in your life. Easier said than done, I know. Believe me, I know. You can do this by meditating on what’s missing or finding something else to fill it with. Get out on the town, meet new people, join a club, a sports team, go online dating, write a book, play video games, ride a purple unicorn. Whatever you do get yourself absorbed into something else so you are busy either working on your crap or busy doing something that won’t make you fat.

2. Change what you put in your mouth. You’ve got to trick your tongue and body here with other similar sweet stuff that isn’t going to make you gain weight or that will satisfy that feeling in your mouth or get your mind off of it. Ideas:

– suck on frozen fruit
– drink water with lemon or some sort of flavor in it
– drink tea
– take magnesium pills (keeps you regular and helps with cravings)
– eat a handful of grapes
– chew gum
– suck on sugar free candy
– brush your teeth
– count to 100
– do 100 jumping jacks
– eat celery or baby carrots
– call a friend (not your mom or someone who will probably piss you off though)
– text someone (not someone who agitates you though)
– write in a journal
– do a quick little shake dance and tell yourself you are all you need and that you’ll be okay if you don’t have that sugar. You are always okay no matter what :)

Just in time for spring we have asparagus shoots. I used to hate eating this veggie until I discovered how good they are raw. Seriously, they take like snap peas. You can also sautee them, blend them with some berries and yogurt or add to a stir fry.
